Valerie Puissant
I live in the heartland of the United States, where I share my home with one kid and several critters. I worked in the field of special education for two decades before moving to the private sector. My interests include travel and cooking, but my oldest hobby is writing.
When I was growing up, my mother always made sure I was surrounded by stories, so I quickly developed a love of reading. I wrote my first story at the age of eight. It was a musical play, based on the classic Three Little Pigs story. My cousins and I performed it in my grandmother’s basement and the family gave it rave reviews. I have been an author ever since.
I wrote my first novel some fifteen years later. It was a fantasy romance featuring African American characters. I was told by the pros that I shouldn’t even bother submitting the manuscript for publication. No one wanted to read African-American fantasy fiction. I set the novel aside and tried to write the stories that publishers wanted. I never made it past the opening paragraphs. Now that I have found a community of fans and creators, I feel like I finally have a platform to tell the stories that I find most compelling. I know my work will find an appreciative audience because fans do exist!
